July's Event Went Well

Well, my first event went pretty well I think. Had 9 people show up, 6 of them played and I personally had a blast. Played two games myself, a 1,000 point game vs. Orks, Orks won 3-2 and an epic 2,500 point team game of IG and Grey Knights vs Orks and Necrons. We won that one, 10-4.

Here's some pics from the day and that particular last battle.

This has been a very, very busy month in 40K for me. So a quick recap of what has gone down so far and upcoming here tomorrow:

- I've been asked by Mark of Bud's Place in Leeds, AL to take over the 40K event management and organization for the store. This is a great opportunity and Mark has given me his full support so far in what I would like to accomplish. My mission is simple and straightfoward: to provide events in which newer, returning and casual players feel welcomed and encouraged. There will stillbe the occassional tournament, but most of the events that will be coming down the pike will be for the more casual player. Tomorrow/today is the first event "Meet the 6th Edition" in which smaller games will be played with an eye on ensuring all the new rules are followed and being learned.

- I've gotten in 2 more 6th edition games this month (3 games in one month plus at least 1 and up to 3 games tomorrow? This is a new record for me!). One against Charles and his Necrons. I got tabled. Badly. By turn 3. It was a sad sad day. I also played against Ken and his Tyranids and lost 8-4 or something like that.

- Pics coming soon, but got my Munitorium Servo-Skull Tape measure, Munitorium Templates and Munitorium Battlefield Markers. I also picked up the Tyranids Codex, Vol. 9 and 10 of Imperial Armour (Badab War), ordered some corpse field resin bases from Secret Weapon Miniatures and got my Hive Tyranid. Why did I get a Hive Tyranid?

- I've officially started my second 40K Army, Tyranids. I've got a couple lists made up at this point and still doing some minor fine tuning, but I expect to be able to field 1000 points within a couple of months. I am still intending on finishing up my Grey knights army, most likely by picking up the starter box in Sept. which will have (expected anyway) Dark Angels, which will act as Allies and some Chaos stuff to build a third army down the road.

Next month promises to be as busy, with plans for:

- A Casual 40K event at Bud's Place at the end of the month.
- Getting some Termagants for my Tyranid army and starting to develop the paint scheme.
- Trying to get out at least once more for a smaller game of 40K.

More details on all of this and some hobby progress to come in the near future, so stay tuned!

A Newb'd 1st Game in 6th

The short version:

Grey Knights vs IG. 90 minutes, 3 full rounds before store closing. GK 10 win over IG 7. If the game had gone on though, GK would of lost I’m pretty sure.

The long version:

IG makeup – a ton of troops. Couple Chimera’s, couple Hellhounds, couple Leman Russ’s. Warlord had Divide to Conquer trait (-1 to opponents Reserve rolls). GK’s had expensive troops like Paladins, a Fortress of Redemption, Purifiers, couple Dreadnoughts. GK’s Warlord had Intimidating Presence (effects leadership of opponent within 12”). Deployment was Hammer and Anvil (short table edges) and the Mission was Crusade with 5 primary objectives. GK held 3 objectives (9 points) and got First Blood (1 point) while IG held 2 objectives (6 points) and got Linebreaker (1 point).

As severely outnumbered that I was and with very limited ability to shoot AV14 I turtled up behind the Fortress and on my 3 objectives. Thus in 3 rounds of play I did very little other than survive. My Dreadnought managed to destroy a Chimera in round 3. While at the time of play this was rather a frustrating battle as I was playing in a style not normally mine and limited at what I could shoot at during the turns we played, review did prove what a cinematic play 6th edition offers though and I think turned out really well.

IG concentrated on the first 3 turns to moving his tanks up the battlefield and taking out my Fortress of Redemption, which ended up doing very little against IG. In a final gambit, IG shot out 4 of 5 Purifiers on one of my objectives, but the 5th unit managed to survive at least 20 wounds between cover and armor saves. The big moment was the very end. IG needed to roll 6 inches or better in order to get the assault off and rolled 4, leaving his unit just short of being able to assault, therefore didn’t get the assault off, allowing  GK to hold the objective at the end of the turn – otherwise would have been a tied game.

Lessons of note:

Fortress of Redemption – I’m not sure if this is a point sink or not. While it didn’t last long under the fire of IG, it did take a lot of firepower to break it and since I was turtled up, was one of the few targets IG had. Not quite sure yet how it would hold up against other armies. Anyone with difficulty against AV14 though would have problems.

AV14 and GK – This is a weakness but one that can be overcome with Allies.

Turtling – Just not my style.

IG – wow they can hurt.

Missions, battlefield, deployment – A++ in 6th Edition!!!
