Grey Knights vs Orks

Last Monday I got a game in with riotbat from CAGE who brought out his new Orks. Very exciting game though it did take us a bit longer than what it has been.

Having more firepower in this game than I have had in the past, we were both surprised (me pleasantly so) when the first 3 rounds were pretty much nothing more than a Turkey shoot.

However, not understanding how badass Orcs are in close combat and completely forgetting to use my Cleansing Flame power of my Purifiers, the bottom of the 3rd round turned the whole game around and became a race for a tie. In which I lost. Lost big time. Was an exciting match though and had a lot of fun. Most importantly - I learned a couple of things. Such as using my superior firepower and not to forget to use my special powers!

Grey Knights Growing!!

Have some lines to clean up on the new Razorback and more detail to put on it as well as some parts, but liking the look of it!

I haven't decided if I am going to swap turrets out yet for visual interest yet, but part of me likes the swap out.

This is why I am a newb. I am so proud of this glowing effect on my Interceptor's backpack/teleporter! Learned how from this month's White Dwarf. The original article was for green energy for Necrons, but I applied it here. I like it!!

Castellan Crowe's details are starting to come along and I've finally attached his banner to his backpack and getting it painted up. Still have to finish him off but taking my time, since for now he's one of my better painted models IMO.

You can see one of my Interceptors on the far left still being worked on, but here's my army so far.  still have a Dreadknight in the box and will be unveiling him in June here I think. Speaking of June, I should be adding another Razorback and a 5-man Purgation squad into the mix as well. Almost there for my first 2,000 point GK Army! (note: the Terminators will be retired for future use and not being counted towards my 2K points)

WIP: Grey knights

My army continues to grow. This time, I'm working on Venerable Dreadnought and a 5-man squad of Interceptors.

Having gotten yet more paint, I had to re-do my paint storage strategy!

Battle Report: Grey Knights vs Necrons 950 pts

This last Monday I was able to get in a quick 950 point game against Necrons. It's the first time I ever saw them in play and I have to admit, they were a curious army. It was 3 objectives and 12" deployment. Opponent had me go first.

My first and probably biggest mistake was sitting my Psycannon Purifiers on a back objective who never got to fire a shot because he never got close enough. In hind sight I should of used them more aggressively in the early game and fallen back to claim the objective in the last couple of turns. Lesson learned.

It ended up being a tied game, with both of us holding an objective and had the third in contention. His Necrons definatley outshot my Grey Knights, though I decimated him in Assault. Unfortunately it took me a couple rounds to figure out the safestplace for my troops was in melee with them and lost my squad of Terminators to him. Not before they disabled and left one of his Ghost Arks out of commission though. My Dreadnought took care of his other Ghost Ark and my squad of Purifiers assaulted a much larger force of Necrons and took them down - hard.

I think I will do better next time playing against Necrons now that I know a little bit about where their strengths and weaknesses lay.

The Next Army Part 2

I still like the idea of working in pairs of armies and my tastes have changed if so very slightly. So my list of armies that I would love to have if money and time wasn't an issue:

Space Marines:

- Dark Angels (Angels of Absolution)
- Imperial Fists
- Salamanders
- Ultramarines
- Howling Griffons
- White Scars
- Ravenguard
- Black Templars
- Grey Knights (Have... almost)
- Blood Angels

Chaos Space Marines:

- Black Legion
- Night Lords
- Thousand Sons
- Death Guard

Imperial Forces:

- Death Korps of Kreig
- Mixed Imperial Forces

Xenos:

- Dark Eldar
- Tryanids
- Chaos Demons

So 18 armies total. Split them as 2 armies every 18 months, then it is forseeable I might have them all in 13 years, which puts us in probably 8th edition maybe even nearing 9th edition. I have no doubt that there will be that many if not more editions of 40K.

The big quesiton is what two armies do I want to start with? In my last post I talked about Dark Eldar and Chaos Space Marines together. Other options are also there though, such as Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines - especially if these turn out to be the two armies released in the 6th edition box set. I have several loyalist Space marine chapters that I would like, as well as for the traitor marines and Chaos Marines.

Of the armies listed, I definately want to wait on:

- Tryanids
- Imperial Army
- Death Korps

That still leaves 15 choices out there though. The real question is will I go back to my original thoughts last year on making 2 Space Marine chapters at the same time or? Time will tell as I ponder it.

The Next Army

As this year rolls by steadily, I'm confronted by the descision of which army to go with next. While I plan on continuing to grow my Grey Knights, they are only a couple of packages away from being at the 2K point mark. This means that I should be able to start on my second army by 6th edition or as it comes out.

Rumor has it (last time I checked) that it will be Dark Angels and Chaos Space Marines (or was it just Chaos?) in the 6th Edition box. I do have an interest in Chaos Space Marines and Chaos in general and while I do not share that interest with the Dark Angels, I've heard they make great spare parts for conversions of other Space Marines.

Despite my interest in Chaos and Chaos Space Marines though, I have a deeper interest in other armies. The last time I got newb army A.D.D. I had come to the descision to grow 2 Space Marine armies at the same time, followed by Dark Eldar. This time around the following armies appeal to me:

- Space Marines, Imperial Fists.

I've seen some sharp looking paint jobs for these guys and my ID says "you want!". However I'm still attached to the idea of:

- Space Marines, Salamanders.
- Space Marines, Ultra Marines (duplicating the second company actually).

In the meantime I also really like the ideas of:

- Dark Eldar
- Chaos and Chaos Space Marine army (building both at the same time)
- Blood Angels

With 6th Edition coming, the smart move seems to be with Chaos Space Marines, especially if they turn up in the box set and then using the bits from the Dark Angels for a future Space Marine army. This leaves the Dark Eldar and Blood Angels though out on a very long limb for me though.

So a direction I am considering is to still build 2 armies together:

- Chaos Space Marines (if included in the box set)
- Dark Eldar

On the other hand if the 6th Edition box set includes Space Marines, I just may go with them building up 2 chapters (TBD later). I look forward to the next few years as I build up a couple/few more armies so I can have the diversity. Too bad I'm so impatient!

A Night of Detail

After a week of back-breaking work and finals for Spring semester, I finally got a night to spend on the hobby. I didn't get a lot done, other than working reds and blues for one of my squads of Purifiers.

While I did work on the entire unit, the Knight of the Flame simply took better pictures.

I started what I will assume to be a long process (especially considering my speed at painting) the banner carried by Castellan Crowe.

I also got the next layer put on my Dreadnought and got him glued together (well as far as shown anyway), minus being glued to his base. I'm liking the look, though there is still a bit of detailing to do to flesh it out and give him some dimension.

Will probably pick up a couple more of the new GW paint pots tomorrow and hopefully in the next couple of weeks will be able to pick up another unit for my army and the new GW Painting Guide.
